Given that the picture looks like something out of Star Wars, it’s almost disappointing to find out that these ultra-sleek, futuristic-looking Alpha Oxy-LED Light Spa Capsuls are being used for such a predictable purpose: weight loss. According to the people at Med Spa Clinic in Tunbridge Wells, UK, lying in one of these pods exposes the user to RGB LED lights that emit wavelengths ranging from 625 to 980 nm, which stimulate the body in a way similar to what takes place during several minutes or hours of exercise. The Med Spa website claims, “Sessions stimulate the metabolism and “burn” calories both during and after the session due to increased metabolic rate and the body’s thermogenic response to the heated environment. The additional energy consumed approximates the energy consumed in brisk walking or jogging for an equivalent time.” The result? The device apparently helps you to shed pounds over the course of a few treatments, which range from 30-100 minutes, and cost $70 to $200. Funny, but I’m sure a gym membership would cost about the same (if not less) for an entire month, and if you used it, along with weight loss you’d reap the added benefits of improved muscle tone, mood, digestion, stress levels, cardiovascular functioning and self esteem, to name just a few. If they can come up with an LED pod that delivers all of those benefits along with weight loss, sign me up. Until then, I’ll stick to the treadmill and an occasional yoga class. That’s not to say however, that these LED pods are any less cool to look at, or that the technology is any less impressive (if it really works, that is). What will they think of next?
