LED tape light - Sleek, flexible, and powerful. It’s more than just a lighting trend; it's a transformative solution for designing and experiencing space.

Let’s uncover "Why LED Tape Light Matters."

LED Tape light is a flexible lighting solution that uses small surface-mounted LEDs on a printed circuit board, also known as PCB.

It typically comes in a spool with an adhesive backing, making it easy to install on a variety of surfaces. The flexible nature of tape light allows it to be bent and cut at marked intervals to fit customized spaces, making it highly adaptable for both residential and commercial lighting applications.

LED Tape light offers exceptional design flexibility due to its slim, low-profile, and flexible form factor.

Its field-cuttable, flexible PCB allows for seamless integration into tight, curved, or unconventional spaces, making it ideal for architectural and millwork applications where traditional fixtures fall short.

This adaptability supports clean, modern lighting designs that emphasize indirect, glare-free illumination.

It can be concealed within recessed or surface-mounted channels for a finished look and delivers continuous, uniform light with minimal visual intrusion.

LED tape light is engineered for high efficacy, consuming a fraction of the energy used by traditional incandescent, halogen, or even fluorescent light sources.

A typical LED tape light operates at 12 or 24 Volts DC and can achieve efficacies ranging from 80 to over 130 lumens per watt, depending on the product type and configuration.

One key advantage of LED technology is its low thermal output. Compared to legacy light sources that convert a significant portion of energy into heat, LED tape light remains cooler to the touch during operation.

Most LED tape light products are rated for over 50,000 hours of continuous use under proper conditions.

These are compatible with energy management systems and advanced dimming protocalls, further increasing efficiency through intelligent control and usage optimization.

LED tape light offers a broad range of color temperatures, from 1800K to 6500K, making it ideal for everything from ambient to task lighting. Advanced options include tunable white, warm dim, RGBW, and RGBTW configurations for full-spectrum color control with true white output.

High-CRI models ensure exceptional color accuracy, essential for visually demanding environments.

It isn’t just about looks; it’s also smart and easy to control. With the right setup, you can do much more than just turn the lights on and off. You can dim lights to set the perfect mood, automate them to follow a schedule, or even connect them to a smart home system for voice control or remote access.

It adds convenience and comfort to homes, efficiency and control to commercial spaces, and, in any environment, it enhances the look and feel while keeping energy use in check.

In the right setting, good lighting doesn’t just help you see better, it shapes how a space feels. With LED tape light, you get both beauty and performance. It is versatile, efficient, and easy to control. Its low-profile design fits almost anywhere, offering clean, modern lighting without bulky fixtures.

That is Why LED Tape Light Matters.

DMX Introduction: A Guide to Modern Lighting Control

Lighting control has come a long way. What started as a simple on-off switch has evolved into dynamic, intelligent systems capable of completely transforming a space. Whether you're setting a mood, building a smart home, or designing an immersive experience, lighting control is key.

And at the heart of modern lighting control is DMX.

This video dives into an introduction to DMX, example system design, wiring, and programming.

Why DMX?

Powerful: Enables granular control of lighting effects.

Precise: Each fixture and channel can be fine-tuned.

Versatile: Works for single-room installs or complex, multi-zone venues.

Scalable: Excellent for everything from home automation systems to massive stage productions.

Understanding DMX Channels and Addresses

A DMX Universe consists of 512 controllable channels.

Each fixture is assigned a starting address.

The number of channels used depends on the fixture's capability.

Each channel corresponds to a lighting attribute—e.g., color, brightness, effects.

Example: LED Tape Light Systems

The number of DMX channels is based on how many control wires the LED tape has (excluding the power wire):

Lighting plays a crucial role in shaping our spaces. But what determines how bright or dim a space is?

That’s why we’re learning about “Why It Matters” with Lumens

Part 1 - What are Lumens?

Lumens measure the brightness of light at the source. It is the best way to compare how much light a fixture produces. The higher the lumens, the brighter the light.

Task lighting refers to focused light sources designed to illuminate specific areas or tasks, providing brighter and more directed light than general ambient lighting. It's often used for activities like reading, writing, cooking, or working at a desk, offering enhanced visibility and reducing eye strain.

Ambient lighting provides general overall illumination to create a comfortable and well-lit environment. This lighting is ideal for cove lighting, ceiling perimeter lighting, and behind furniture to enhance the room's atmosphere with a soft, diffused glow.

Accent lighting emphasizes specific objects or areas within a space, drawing attention to them. It highlights features, creates focal points, and adds visual interest.

Lumens have a direct relationship with foot candles in practical lighting applications. Choosing the right lumen output ensures your space is functional and inviting. If it's too bright, it may feel too harsh. And if it's too dim, it may not meet your needs.

Part 2 - Why Lumens Matter

Deciding on the appropriate lighting for your space can be daunting. Lighting designers and specifiers are experts in light output and lumens based on application. To electricians and general contractors installing the lighting, here are a few things to consider when selecting the appropriate lumen output for your space.

Task lighting:
Choose higher lumens for task. Task lighting can include high-traffic areas and workstations. This type of lighting can control your area's overall look and feel.

Ambient lighting:
Indoor ambient lighting may require fewer lumens, while outdoor workspace lighting needs more for visibility, ensuring great lighting can help with better experiences.

Accent lighting:
Accent lighting requires the least amount of illumination. From bookshelves and cove lighting to wall grazing and washing, accent lighting helps keep the focus on the parts of your space you want to be accentuated.

Whether designing a workspace, setting the mood for an evening, or highlighting a feature, understanding lumens helps you achieve the perfect balance of brightness and ambiance. Lighting is more than illumination. It's about creating an experience. Lumen output is the key to getting it right.

That is why lumens matter.

If you’ve ever noticed your LED tape lights dimming toward the end of a long run or failing to shine as brightly as expected, you may be experiencing an issue known as voltage drop.

That’s why we’re learning about “Why It Matters” with Voltage Drop.

Part 1 - What is Voltage Drop?

Voltage drop is reduced electrical voltage as power travels through your wire and LED tape light, which can lead to reduced output.

Some common factors are the length and gauge of lead wire, the length of the tape light, max run, load, and resistance, including connections and soldering.

Let’s look at these factors more closely.

Positioning the driver as close to the LED tape light as possible will keep the wire length short. The wires that supply power to your LED tape lights play a significant role in voltage drop. Smaller gauge wires have higher resistance.

Exceeding the maximum suggested tape light run can increase the risk of voltage drop. As electricity travels through the tape light, it can cause resistance. Poor-quality connections, including faulty solder joints or improperly secured connectors, can introduce additional resistance into the circuit.

Part 2 - How to Use a Voltage Drop Chart

We always recommend planning your projects ahead of time to avoid these issues. Since we should always consider voltage drop when specifying projects, first calculate the total wattage load, then select the length of wire needed.

This chart illustrates the maximum cable length and wire gauge to ensure, as an industry standard, no more than a 3% drop for twelve-volt and twenty-four-volt circuits based on varying wire gauges and load wattages.

Download the Voltage Drop Chart

Part 3 - Effects of Voltage Drop

Voltage drop affects LED lighting in several ways, primarily through performance and visual appearance.

Some problems occur over time, others more immediately. Here are some potential problems. LEDs further from the power source become dimmer than those closer to it because the reduced voltage cannot fully power the LEDs at the end of the run.

Reduced light output decreases the power reaching the LEDs, leading to a noticeable reduction in overall brightness, particularly at the farthest points.

Why Voltage Drop Matters

Here are a few ways to help decrease voltage drop. Keep runs within the suggested max run. Use a larger wire gauge and break up your runs into smaller segments.

Proper planning ensures your lighting performs consistently, looks professional, and operates safely and efficiently for years.

It matters because it impacts your LED lighting systems' brightness, appearance, quality, reliability, efficiency, and safety.

Whether illuminating a kitchen, creating ambiance in a living room, or designing a commercial space, managing voltage drop is essential for achieving the best results.

That is Why Voltage Drop Matters.

Which LED lighting should you use in a bathroom? What about a patio or under a cabinet in the kitchen? Knowing the Ingress Protection rating of these installations helps ensure your LED lighting will withstand the elements and continue to function reliably.

That is why we are learning “Why It Matters” with Ingress Protection.

Part 1 - What is Ingress Protection?

The Ingress Protection, or IP rating system, is a standardized method for defining a device’s resistance to solid and liquid ingress.

This system determines how well LED tape light and drivers can withstand environmental factors, ranging from everyday household environments to demanding conditions.

Each IP rating consists of two digits. The first number, from 0 - 6, indicates the level of protection against solid particles, while the second number, from 0 - 9, denotes the level of protection against liquids.

Part 2 - How is IP Measured

IP ratings are measured through a series of standardized tests designed to evaluate the degree of protection of a device's enclosure against solids and liquids.

The first digit in the IP rating, ranging from 0 to 6, reflects how well the enclosure prevents the ingress of solids. A rating of 6, for instance, means the LED tape light is completely dust-tight, ensuring no dust particles can enter.

The second digit of the IP rating, ranging from 0 to 9, represents the level of liquid protection, with each level corresponding to specific types of water exposure, such as drips, splashes, jets, and submersion.

This rating system provides a reliable and transparent way to understand how well a product will perform under certain environmental conditions. It helps ensure safety, durability, and reliability in everyday and extreme conditions.

Part 3 - Why IP Matters

Let's look at Why IP Matters and some real-life examples using LED tape light.

We'll start with IP20. This basic rating is suitable for indoor use with no water exposure and little dust exposure.

Additionally, IP65 is ideal for environments where dust and water are a concern, such as outdoors, where it could get lightly rained on or wet.

As we increase the rating scale, IP67 provides robust protection, making it suitable for LED tape lights that might encounter heavy rain or accidental temporary submersion, such as pooling.

IP68 is a rating that indicates an LED tape light is completely dust-tight and can withstand continuous submersion in water up to 10 feet. This makes it suitable for pools, spas, steam rooms, and places where animals and people reside in the water.

UL 676 is a safety standard for underwater lighting fixtures in pools, spas, or fountains. In these examples, a UL 676 installation requires IP68 or IP69-rated products.

You also need to consider condensation. For example, a bathroom installation can range from IP20 to IP68, depending on the product location and local code.

By providing a standardized measure of durability, IP ratings help users select the right products for their needs, whether for everyday use or harsh conditions. Understanding these ratings will help protect your investment.

These IP ratings are crucial to preventing damage, ensuring safety, and extending the lifespan of your tape light.

That is Why IP Matters.

Those initial measurements do not include additional Special CRI samples, R9 to R15. Over the years, with improvements in LED tape light, a standard CRI was 70+, but now 90+ is standard, with exceptional CRI averaging 95 to 97.

Imagine walking into a retail store to find a vibrant red shirt, but in the changing room, it looks brown. This color discrepancy is due to the low R9 value of the changing room lights. Even with a 90+ CRI rating, the lighting can fail to render colors accurately, highlighting the need for high R9 values for true color representation.

This is crucial because the light source heavily influences our perception of objects. A high CRI value ensures that the colors we see under the light source are as close to their actual appearance as possible, enhancing our visual experience.

Not all 90+ CRI light sources are the same. You can have a high CRI and a low R9 or R12 value. Those specific R values are made up of red and blue. Without higher R9 and R12 values, colors look muted and lifeless.

Part 2 - How CRI is Measured

CRI is measured using a spectrophotometer. The spectrophotometer breaks light up into discrete wavelengths, measures the intensity of each wavelength, compares that data to a reference sunlight spectrum, and then integrates that data into the R values.

Part 3 - Why CRI Matters

CRI enhances color representation and visual comfort, improving lighting quality in various settings.

Accurate color rendering helps customers make informed decisions, enhancing satisfaction and potentially boosting sales.

Good CRI performance elevates color rendering, contributing to a better visual experience.

That is Why CRI Matters.
